SPRING/EARLY SUMMER FRUIT

Description:

Strawberries are small red fruits with tiny seeds surrounding their exterior. They are the first berry of the season.

Selecting:

When selecting, choose plump berries with bright red coloring and fresh looking green caps attached. Avoid wilted, limp or bruised berries and any that show any mold on them.

Berries that have white or green parts have been picked too early and will not ripen fully
and are best avoided.

Storing and Handling:

Ripe berries should be eaten as soon as possible but can be refrigerated, without washing, for a couple of days.

Preparing:

Just before eating, cut away the cap and the core with a small paring knife and any bruised or damaged parts. Swish in a bowl of cold water, shake off excess water and allow to dry on paper towels.

For maximum flavor, enjoy your berries immediately after purchasing, washed and at room temperature.

Serving Suggestions:

Salads: These berries are a terrific fruit salad addition but can also be added to vegetable salads, as well.

Dessert Topping: Try sprinkling a little sugar over a bowl of cut up berries and allow to stand for about 5-10 minutes to let the juices form. This makes a great topping for pound cake, angel food cake and even ice cream.

Strawberry Dipper: A great way to serve strawberries is dipped in warm melted chocolate. You can also take sour cream or Greek style yogurt and add a little cinnamon and honey to it and then dip fresh washed whole strawberries. It makes a quick, easy and delicious fruit dessert.
