SUMMER/EARLY FALL FRUIT
Description: Plums are a stone fruit that come in a wide variety of colors including, yellow, red, blue, green, purple and purplish-black. They also come in various shapes and sizes that include round and even heart-shaped. This fruit is available in the summer months through early fall. Their peak harvest time is August. Selecting: Look for fruit that is plump and has good color. They should be firm to the touch without any cracks, bruises or blemishes. Avoid fruit that is too soft or too hard. Storing and Handling: Fruit that is not quite ripe can be stored at room temperature if needed and then refrigerated when fully ripe. They will last up to about five days if stored properly. Wash thoroughly under running water until clean. Simply slice around the pit, twist to separate the two halves and remove the pit. Serving Suggestions: Salads: This fruit can be served raw and work well in both fruit and vegetable salads. Slice or dice and add to your salads. Serving Idea: A very quick and delicious salad can be made by cutting washed and pitted plums into slices and place over a bed of washed salad greens. Top with crumbled goat cheese and walnut pieces. Drizzle with some fresh squeezed lemon juice and a little olive oil. Top with some fresh grated black pepper if desired.
