Selecting:

When selecting, choose fruit that is plump and soft with smooth, shiny skin.

Avoid any that appear shriveled or have signs of mold or sugar crystals on the skin.

Storing and Handling:

To store, place fresh fruit in the refrigerator in a plastic bag for up to approximately two seeks.

Dried dates should be stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry place and will last up to approximately six months or in the refrigerator for up to about a year.

Preparation:

Cut fruit lengthwise and remove the pit.

Serving Suggestions:

Salads: With its sweet flavor, this fruit is a great addition to any salad. It combines well with fruit salads and even vegetable salads will take on an extra layer of flavor from this fruit.

Snack or Light Dessert: Take pitted dates and stuff the inner cavity with cream cheese, almonds or even walnuts. You could also combine the cream cheese with chopped nuts and then stuff the dates with this combination. This makes an easy snack or a simple dessert anytime.
